Designing Elegant Solutions for Innovation, Growth & Navigation
Designing Elegant Solutions for Innovation, Growth & Navigation
(DESIGN) is a design thinking workshop based on Prof Jeanne Liedtka’s
4-phase process:
What Is?,
What If?
What Wows?
and What Works?
After attending this workshop, learners will be able to do the following:
• Practice adaptive thinking in various situations and
facing various problems
• Analyse a complex problem to understand the desired
value of a required solution
• Generate radical ideas to match to the complexity of the
problem
• Develop concepts into prototypes that are ready to be
tested and pitched
• Conduct a learning launch to test their developed
concepts in its targeted environment
• Create a strong desire to change their immediate
environment as a Designer

Course structure
Learning Outcome: : Students will be able to adopt a versatile mindset and apply analytical, critical, creative and lateral
thinking to spark and develop elegant solutions for complex world issues that require logistics and empathy.
Tools: : Journey Mapping
Learning Outcome: Students will be able to analyse the value of a problem and identify its component problems that
contribute to its complexity
Tools: Value Chain Analysis, PDRM: Process, Decision,
Relationship, Motivation
Learning Outcome: Students will be able to quickly and freely generate radical out-of-the-box solutions to pitch
towards solving complex problems
Tools: Brainstorming, SCAMPER
Learning Outcome: Students will be able to develop a chosen concept that best solves all aspects of a problem by adding
deeper details and functionalities.
Tools: PDRM, Rapid Prototyping
Learning Outcome: : Students will be able to test the validity
and robustness of their solution in a learning launch.
Tools: Learning Launch, Peer Review
Learning Outcome: Students will be able to critically analyse options without emotional noise and justify a choice based on weighted analysis.
Tools: Decision Tree
